What age does the average Chihuahua live to?
I've heard small dogs can live very long lives, and I have a pretty healthy indoor Chihuahua female that has been spayed most of her life (never had a litter). She is now 9 years old, and I worry because we have always had much bigger dogs and they rarely made it past 12 years. My husband and I are so attached to this little girl, I hope it is true that little dogs live long lives!

Chihuahuas are very hardy dogs for their size. They can actually live a good 20 years. I have a chihuahua and love the heck out of him. In fact, he's the reason I started my website on chihuahuas. I got him the same month I got married so it's nice to know that I've had him my entire marriage. Anyways, Chihuahuas are great. Hope this helps.

Some chihuahuas can live to be as old as 20 years old! the average is between 10-17 years. Keep your dog happy and healthy and you can definitely see her well past 12 years.

I understand your attachment, I have two wonderful chihuahuas. From what I have learned of them they live anywhere from 12-20 years. They run into problems usually form a poor diet. This is one instance it pays to get the good stuff! Buy food with no preservatives, added sugar, corn syrup or animal by products. Same goes for treats. Also, check with a family pet store and ask them which one is the most natural. I give my dogs fruits and veggies for treats instead of processed treats. My chis love cucumber skin, apples peeled and chopped, raw cabbage, frozen peas and greens beans, cooked broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and so on. Just think in the wild their food is not processed and cooked. Every once in a while I get raw ground turkey from a local farm and mix it with cooked and smashed split peas, they love it. Raw eggs are good too as long as they are from a local farm and very fresh. Just some quick tips if you aren't already watching their diets. When I got my 3-year female chi she was in very poor health but perked right up with her new diet.
