edit : "goo-goo-gaa-gaa" is usually directed at toddlers or younger. Still, I guess if an adult feels he has nothing intelligent to say to the child (as if...), will at least simulate a conversation :) Though beats me. Cheers.

Because their brains are not fully developed. So we "dumb down" to where they can understand.
If you only know addition and subtraction, how would you understand calculus?
So first you speak addition and subtraction, then you add a little multiplication and division, then throw in fractions, etc. until you've helped the person build enough knowledge to understand calculus.
