Why would a player tell you that he is one?

So here is the thing, there was that guy that I used to have feelings for him and I thought he had feelings for me too, after a while I've learned that he is kinda a player and I have even noticed some signs so I kept the relationship "just friends" and with time our feelings just faded, I guess anyway!

So we became really good Friends , He considered me one of his best friends and he started to tell me things, about girls he knew, his previous relationship and his ex, and one time he told me what means that he is a player and he likes to play girls, i was surprised that he said something like that even if i already knew but he noticed my reaction and immediately said: no no i'm just kidding, don't get me wrong ... anyway after that conversation , after 2 days I told him that he is a good person and a dear friend of mine and that kind person shouldn't do that to girls because some of them are weak and can get really hurt, he told yes he should stop doing that , I even said sorry to him about me saying that but he said no you are right I have to stop ... after that he didn't talk to me again, I've tried on msn he kept answering one word answers and i asked him" Did I do anything wrong, talk to me"? he said no and just that ... Now I don't know what should I do ? It feels like i'm losing my friend .. But i'm not even sure does he even consider me more than a friend ... i'm confused.. what do you think?
