I'm having trouble saving money and keep spending and spending.?

Do you guys have any ideas to help me save more?

My rent is 500.

Utilities are usually about 200.

Transportation is about 60.

Food is probably another 100.

I bring home about 1700/month and have like NO savings. I find it hard to not spend any money. Thoughts?

Saving money for most people is impossible. The reason is simple....most people buy something when they WANT it and not when they NEED it.

Follow the following formula and you will save money.

First; list all your expenditures. It is important to think of everything, like tabs for the car, haircuts, movie cash, shoes, etc. along with the usual bills.

Second; go buy a box of envelopes.

Third; Cash your paycheck. This system requires cash.

Forth; you say your rent is $500. You also say you bring in about $1750. If you take 500 and divide it by 1750, you get .285. Whenever you get paid (no matter how much you make) multiply the amount by .285 and take whatever that dollar amount is and put it in the "rent" envelope. Continue this with all your bills. When you are dealing with cash, you quickly realize their may not be enough to properly fill each envelope the way you want to.

This is where hardcore decisions need to be made. lower budgets, get another job, etc. but the envelope system is an in-your-face way of showing you just how much you spend. It isn't easy to follow through with this system because it forces you to budget and budgeting is painful. But you want to save, so take my advice and give it a try.

    Good luck. Doc Robb

First off, I want to apologize for your sister's death. That's terrible and I'm so sorry to hear. Secondly, don't let this money issue get in your way of fashion. If you have a great enough interest in it, you'll have no problem finding neat stuff. There is a recession going on right now, so must of us don't have a lot of money to spend. However, I can say that you can easily find some good, vintage clothing at any Thrift Store. If you look hard enough and take the time- I'm sure you could walk out with a handful of cute clothes for as much as $20. Because, let's face it. Most stores that sell particularly nice clothes aren't gonna sell it for cheap. However, there are stores that you can look into that are affordable to an extent, such as Forever21 and Winners. Hope I somewhat helped your situation and keep your chin up.

1700 take home minus 860 in expenses is 840 leftover - almost half your take home pay is available for saving or squandering on needless things. Make a plan to put a certain amount of each check into a savings account. If your company offers direct deposit, see if they can split it between the checking and savings account. This way, you don't even have to think about it; it's done for you. I highly suggest you build a budget, check out daveramsey.com and mint.com for free help. To curb spending, only carry cash with you that you intend to spend; leave the rest at home.

Sure! I'm a college student, and have pretty much stopped asking my parents for money since i turned 18, as they have much more important things to worry about then how to pay for my spending habits. Ironically, that's also around the time i started to change my wardrobe. Therefore, I've never had much money to spend on clothes. The secret, is sales. I know it sounds pretty simple, right. Anyway, i would start off looking at stores like "Marshalls, TJ Max or Filenes basement" which have a bunch of name brand and really cute/in clothes, but for sometimes as low as 1/3 of the normal price. I got one of my favorite jackets from Marshalls, for only like 10 dollars. When shopping in stores, try not to buy clothes when they first come out. I tend to window shop ALOT. when i see a shirt or skirt i really like, i remember it, and look for it every time i come across that store again. Sooner or later, I normally find a store, that has it on discount, or clearance, and i save a good 20 dollars. And, i rarely wait long either, maybe a couple of months, before the new stuff start to go down. Also, always look in stores with clearance, and sales in the windows. Sometimes even if stores boasts things like "SALE $19.95 Shirts", if you go inside, they may have shirts for 10.00 or 5.00 dollars too. Also, Unless it's a really good deal, I normally don't buy things the first time i see them. I usually just wait until after i finish shopping the mall, and then i come back for it at the end. Mainly just because, sometimes you find a cute outfit for cheap somewhere, and then a few stores later, you find a cuter outfit for even cheaper. And it makes things simpler, and keeps you from over buying. Don't try to replace your wardrobe in one visit, set a certain amount of money your willing to spend before you go out shopping, and what you hope to buy, and then try to stick to that. Have you tried vintage stores? Depending on where you live, you might be able to find really nice stuff, for very little. And lastly, don't worry too much about it. Ask your parents how much they believe they can spend on clothes for you, and work within that. Now that you're interested in shopping and clothes, you'll be constantly seeing a shirt here you want, and a pair of jeans there, and you'll fill up your wardrobe before you notice. Hope I helped a little

Have your HR department automatically deduct $100 a pay check and put it in a savings account. Make sure the nearest branch is not easily accessible and do NOT get an ATM card for the account. Most people spend because they have easy access to their cash. By making it harder to access the cash, it gives you more time to think about what you are doing.
