Onyomi is the Japanese pronunciation of Chinese characters used in Japanese. For Japanese name, they use both the kunyomi and the onyomi reading for names.

    >>Got this off a website: To write names, we use both kunyomi and Onyomi reading. But, English names are usually translated with Onyomi reading, and if the sound of onyomi reading of a kanji character is the same as the sound of your name, its kanji character is allocated.

Anyway, if you're going to create Japanese names for your characters, it might be better to use existing names and just mix up the first names and last names. If you really want to come up with something original, you can use the onyomi or the kunyomi of the characters.

Even in Japan, whenever a person writes their name, someone who sees their name (or something) asks them, "How do you read this?" Cause I think it just really depends :)

    Hope I answered your question.
