What is my political ideology?

I do not really associate myself as being a "Democrat" or "Republican" or Liberal or Conservative, but for class I have to decide what my political ideology is. Here are some things I believe in. Please tell me what you think I am most closely associated with. Thanks

1. My belief that the government should fight poverty, but that people should not be on welfare forever and only those who really need it should be on it. There should be time restrictions or guidelines on the length of benefits.

2. I believe that healthcare should be affordable and the pharmaceutical companies should not take advantage of the demand for their product.

3. I believe that welfare is a good thing as long as certain criteria are met. I do not believe people should be on assistance forever, so limits should be placed on benefits.

4. I am for defending human rights and civil liberties.

5. I do not support the idea that the rich get richer while everyone else is left behind. I am in favor of progressive taxes

6. I believe that most people are basically good, for the most part.

7. While I do not necessarily think abortion is a good thing, I do believe that in certain situations abortion is needed (rape, age, health issues).

8. I believe affirmative action is needed to balance the workplace and rid companies of discrimination.

9. I believe that there should be no death penalty and that life without parole would be a far worse punishment.

To me it sounds really liberal but I know there are divisions within the Liberal ideology and that's what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help.

It's not really liberal. You are a moderate liberal. However, because our society has become much more conservative over the last half century those ideas SEEM extremely liberal. They aren't though. Welcome to the Democrats.

Your beliefs in welfare and abortion would seem to point to moderate Democrat, however, I would argue that your belief in price controls on pharmaceuticals might move you more to the left.

Of course, Nixon was a Republican, and he approved price controls for Gasoline. But he wasn't very conservative and anyhow that did not work out to well. You see, gasoline production requires a lot of investment and there is a lot of risk. Sometimes as competition increases the price drops and there's a bust. When prices were fixed, suppliers had no incentive to increase production, so gas stations often ran out of gas. As a result, when there was gas, cars would line up for miles outside of a gas station and you would have to wait hours. Sometimes they would run out of gas even after you waited for hours. When you were parked somewhere, people would siphon the gas out of your car -- it happened to my mother once. After going dancing at a club, she tried to start the car, and it wouldn't start because there was no gas in the car.

By the way, since you seem to favor a time limit on welfare, I would encourage you think about one on affirmative action. First let me say, I'm against it. I would argue businesses like to make money. Therefore they will always try to pick the best-qualified, most hardworking candidate, whether he's black, white, or purple with green polka-dots.

Secondly, affirmative action is codified discrimination, and it builds resentment. My father who is white got a near perfect score on a civil service exam, but he didn't get the job. Whatever personal opinion he has of blacks, you can sure as hell bet he doesn't like affirmative action.

It might interest you to know that businesses in the South were almost uniformly against segregation for the simple reason that they knew they would lose money, but Democrats down there forced the policy on them. Yes, Republicans had nothing to do with segregation; Martin Luther King was a Republican back then. Keep in mind, conservatives generally oppose onerous business regulations, like segregation for instance.

I would also argue that affirmative action creates a hostile working environment. If you have someone who is totally incompetent but happens to be a minority, you may get sued if you fire them, or even if you don't promote them.

The current recession was partly caused because banks were afraid to turn down minorities for loans, even when they had no assets or no good prospect of repaying the loan. Sometimes you hear code phrases like "we are an equal opportunity lender/employer." They should be translated

thus: "We discriminate against white males, so don't sue us!"

But anyhow, due to changes in immigration, the relative percentage of whites is rapidly shrinking. Pretty soon they will be a minority. Is it a good idea to continue to codify discrimination against them?

    Blue dog democrat.

I say that because you seem to be somewhat pro life, and on welfare you are not completely liberal because you believe there should be limits.

To me you appear to be liberal leaning, but the political spectrum isn't a straight line. The link above will give you a test, and help you to pinpoint it.
