Excellent question. i will try my level best to answer. i will be happy if it gives you satisfaction. Now we will go to the answer.
my answer: yes, it is true as per valmiki ramayana that sita questions Hanuman. we will see details step by step.
Sita was in Ashoka vana while questioning Hanuman. what is the need of asking this question to Hanuman by sita ? This we will see later.
Hanuman came to srilanka to meet sita as a messenger of Rama and in ashoka vana. Before sita seeing hanuman, Ravana came to ashoka vana to see sita and the cruel taunts of ravana pierced the tender heart of sita. After his departure, sita decides something to quit the body.
Hanuman appears before her and told that '' rama fares well and he sent me here to acquaint you with it. i came here to take back news of you to him '' and thus hanuman narrated the events to sita. hanuman after a while standing before her with his palms joined above his head. sita got a doubt since ravana the master of illusory arts may be with new avatar.
Hence, to clear her doubts sita asked Hanuman this: '' how could there be any relation between the monkeys, bereft of reason, and rama and lakshmana of the line of ikshvaku and the spiritual disciples of maharish vashishta ? ''
Seetha asks Hanuman to describe the various characteristics of Rama and Lakshmana. Hanuman describes in detail to Seetha the appearance and qualities of Rama and Lakshmana. Hanuman also gives an account of how a friendship developed between Rama and Lakshmana as well as Sugreeva the Lord of monkeys. Hanuman also narrates his own life-story from the time he was born till his role as a minister of Sugreeva. He ends the story with his sight of Seetha in Lanka.
Hearing that narration about Rama from Hanuman the excellent of monkeys, Seetha in a sweet voice spoke the following gentle words:
kva te raameNa samsargaH katham jaanaasi lakShmaNam |
vaanaraaNaam naraaNaam ca katham aasiit samaagamaH || 5-35-2
"Where was your contact with Rama? How do you know Lakshmana? How did the union between monkeys and men arise?" valmiki ramayana Chapter [Sarga] 35.
"O Hanuma! What are the characteristics of Rama and Lakshmana? Narrate them to me, so that sorrow will not take possession of me again." "Of what kind was the appearance of that Rama and of Lakshmana? Of what kind was their form? How were the thighs? How were the arms? Tell me."
Hearing the words of Seetha, Hanuman, the son of wind-god, then started to describe Rama.
After explaining about Rama and Lakshmana, hanuman is telling how friendship started between Rama and sugreeva. "Rama and Lakshmana, the two tigers among men, very anxiously desirous of seeing you and searching all over the earth, came in contact with us."
"Those two brothers Rama and Lakshmana, wandering only in search of you all over the earth, saw Sugreeva the Lord of monkeys, sitting on the top of Rishyamuka mountain, filled with several trees, having been dethroned by his elder brother, oppressed with fear, but who was pleasant to the sight." "We for one are serving that Sugreeva, the Lord of monkeys, who was true to his promise, but was dethroned from the kingdom from his elder brother."
"Those two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, the excellent among men, were fully endowed with kindness, after knowing the exact position about Sugreeva. Then, I made Rama and Lakshmana to ascend on my back and took them to Sugreeva's place."

"I informed the high-souled Sugreeva about the true position of Rama and Lakshmana. After a mutual conversation between those two brothers and Sugreeva, a great friendship developed among them."
"Then, Lakshmana informed Sugreeva the king of monkeys about the sadness of Rama, (who is unwearied in action), born out of your disappearance."

"That day when Rama and Sugreeva were together, both of them made an agreement that Rama would annihilate Vali and Sugreeva would arrange for a search of you."
raama sugriivayoH aikyam devi evam samajaayata |

"O princess! A friendship was held well in such a manner between Rama and Sugreeva. Know me as Hanuman, who came here as a messenger on behalf of both of them."
"O Seetha with an excellent waist! Hearing about the slaughter of Jatayu, that Sampati the son of Aruna was very much pained and said that you were staying in Ravana's house."
"O Seetha! I am born in the womb of the wife of that Kesari the monkey, by the grace of the wind-god. By my activity alone, I am renowned as Hanuma in this world."
"O Seetha! I described the qualities of Rama, your husband, to cause trust in you. O the faultless princess! Rama will take you from here within a short time."
you additionally asked this: '' How you understand this ? what will be your answer ? ''. i gave my answer above. Now, i answer what i understood from this.
it is easy to make friends, difficult to keep them.
सर्वथा सुकरं मित्रं दुष्करं परिपालनम् । (रामायण - किष्किन्धा काण्ड ३२-७) sarvatha sukaram mitram, dushkaram paripalanam |
how we love to make friends. that is what humanity is all about- connecting to other people. if social networking is any indication, our worth sometimes is measured by how many friends we have in our circle.
sugreeva the vanara king, was helped by rama to end his exile and get his wife back by the only possible way - killing vali who had banished sugreeva and kept his wife. rama-sugreeva friendship is a classic example of "types of friendships" where it is mutually beneficial and each comes to it for some help from the other, may be because they are in similar situation. it was true for rama and sugreeva.
Both rama and sugreeva was on sorrows. Even in the sorrow, Rama never break the dharma. He acted as per dharma. Rama not distinguished man, monkey for having friendship. it is a best example for friendship.
hope this will help you and thanks for the opportunity !!!

Hanuman is the brightest example of one whose living is filled with humility.
As said by udaya k - when Mahavishnu took the incarnation of Shri Rama -In accordance to the wish of Lord Vishnu, Indra, the king of the demigods, expanded into Vali, Surya, the sun-god, into Sugriva and Vayu, the wind-god, expanded into the mighty Hanuman.
When Hanuman first presented himself before Rama and offered his services, Rama turned to Lakshmana and said, "Brother! Listen! Notice how Hanuman has mastered the Vedas. His speech is saturated with the humility and dedication which the Rig Veda embodies and the reverence that the Yajur Veda embodies, and the intuitive vision that the Sama Veda grants. Hanuman knows all the spiritual texts. He is a genuine devotee. Sugriva is fortunate to have him as his minister, Hanuman, whose thoughts, words and deeds are offered to God." When these three are in perfect harmony, the person wins the Grace of God, as Hanuman succeeded in securing it.
Rama is the first to make a move towards friendship, and even when Sugriva hesitates, He continues to offer His friendship, and even asks if this is acceptable to Sugriva.
When Hanuman meets Sita in Lanka, She asks Him how a friendship could have resulted between Rama and a monkey? What was the connection between a man and a monkey? Hanuman tells Her that just as She had confided in him (Hanuman) many things that even Lakshmana did not know, so did Rama make Sugriva His confidant. Were Sita and Hanuman the same species? Yet, had they not struck up a bond of mutual respect? So had Sugriva and Rama become friends.
The Ramayana shows us that both Sita and Rama are alike in their quality of kindness.
Thank u.

sugreeva, the monkey king sends hanuman to meet Rama and Lakhmana. Hanuman attired as an ascetic, goes to meet rama. when hanuman meets them he wondered about the dress. Hanuman thinks that they look like princes, but where are the ornaments ? They look like thos who should wearing ornaments, but are withou any. Rama tells hanuman that he has come to make friends with sugreeva. Accordingly, when they met Rama offered sugreeva a hand of friendship. Sugreeva hesitates since it is unbelievable. It would be seen here that anyone can reject Lord's friendship ?
why sugreeva hesitates ? Rama is no ordinary person. How can a mere monkey make friends with God himself ?
Rama is the first to make a move towards friendship, and even when sugreeva hesitates, He continues to offer His friendship and even asks if is acceptable to sugreeva. This is what sita asks hanuman. when hanuman meets sita in srilanka, she asks him how a friendship could have resulted between Rama and a monkey.? what was the connection between a man and monkey ?
Here Hanuman tells her that just as she had confided in him many things that even lakshmana did not know, so did Rama make sugreeva his confidant. May be to know the truth of hanuman or for some reasons since ravana may transform into many by his magic acts. From this one thing is sure. The ramayana shows us that both Sita and Rama are alike in their quality of kindness.

Hanuman is Pawanaputra. Do we use the word Putr or Putra in Sasnskrit for animals or Monkeys. Hanuman is considered Chiranjeevi (Eternally Living).
Otherwise too each of them had a known previous birth. Similarly the word man is derivative from Manushya, human being, and Hanuman can also be Hanu the Man. He was erect. The tail was his weapon of mass destruction of Adharma while sustainable development through sustained Dharma is achieved. It is also believed that when Mahavishnu took the incarnation of Shri Rama, Lord Brahma commanded some gods and goddesses to take the avatar of 'Vanaras' or monkeys. Indra, the god of war and weather, was reincarnated as Bali; Surya, the sun god as Sugriva; Vrihaspati, the preceptor of the gods, as Tara, and Pavana, the god of wind, was reborn as Hanuman, the wisest, swiftest and strongest of all apes. Further you can see the stature of those who lived in ancient times if this nerration is true in the following link:

Scientists have unveiled a 47-million-year-old fossilised skeleton of a monkey hailed as the missing link in human evolution.
This 95%-complete 'lemur monkey' is described as the "eighth wonder of the world"
The search for a direct connection between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom has taken 200 years - but it was presented to the world today at a special news conference in New York.
The discovery of the 95% complete 'lemur monkey' - dubbed Ida - is described by experts as the "eighth wonder of the world".
They say its impact on the world of palaeontology will be "somewhat like an asteroid falling down to Earth".
Researchers say proof of this transitional species finally confirms Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and the then radical, outlandish ideas he came up with during his time aboard the Beagle.
Sir David Attenborough said Darwin "would have been thrilled" to have seen the fossil - and says it tells us who we are and where we came from.

Answer by Shri C. Sri Vidya Rajagopalan has been a new aspect of one of the most important messages of The Ramayana ‘The relation between a Man and a Vanara’.
Man has always been egocentric, reluctant to ‘SAY’ reluctant to ‘ASK’ his EGO has always come in between, I am ‘SUPERIOR’ – He is ‘INFERIOR’. Of what help me can this lowly inferior one can be for me.
Ramayana for me has always been an excellent example of this relation, even Bhagwan ‘Shri Ram’ had to take help of ‘Vanaras’ to save Sita, to bring back to life his brother ‘Laxaman’ and finally to win the war of the ‘GOOD’ over the ‘evil’.
Bhagwan Shri Ram has been the epitome of this lesson on ‘’HUMILITY’ for us. This relation between a Man and a Vanara teaches us ‘Humility’. Humility to respect the lowly and the small.
In the Mahabharata this ‘Vanara’ had to teach some lessons on humility that he had learned from Bhagwan Shri Ram to ‘Bheema’.
For me this is the meaning of the relation between ‘The Man and The Vanara’
God Bless

Hanuman was god and in Ramayana the Vanaras were a race considered to be totally backward and inferior and thats why they were called monkey but in reality they were not monkeys, they were backward people who are called monkeys in Ramayana,Hanuman was a divine being who had divine capabilities.

We have lost the 'key'! We too have the tail remiscence at the foot of our back-bone. Yes, we too can do everything like a monkey and there are several close resemblances. We have forgotten to walk on four legs over the time!

there is a story of behind it, years of ago before ramayan, narad ji went to a swamvar with the permision of lord vishnu, he demands the harimukh, lord vishnu gives him a mouth of monkey and he went to the swamvar, and where the girl insulted him and say that you have a monkey face, than naradji went to l;ord vishnu and say lord vishnu that when u will take birth on land u will take the help of monkey to releve his wife, and he will live his life without wife, but there is a meaning as well that when a monkey destroy any thing they help to create something in forest, but a man destroy anything he doesnt do, they give a message to us to live together and jointly

we can believe monkeys and other animals. But, we should not compare the Anjaneya with monkey since Anjaneya was an incarnation of shiva and also a chiranjeevi.
