How do I transfer software from old pc to new netbook. Any XP to vista/windows 7 compatability problems?

Planning to get a new netbook for travelling etc.

I've got a desktop PC at the mo, never had a laptop.

Software I regularly use on the PC are Microsoft Works, Photoshop, Excel, Word etc.

I need to be able to use these on the netbook for my business etc.

So, depending on what the new netbook comes with, I either want to transfer my old software (mostly 2002-2005 versions) off the original CDs onto the netbook (but can I do that by transferring them onto USB first or do i need to get an external cd drive??) OR I need to go for a netbook that has these programmes pre-installed.

Things is I currently use Windows XP (pro, version 2002, SP3) - if the netbook has Vista or Windows 7 it'll have much newer programmes. Great.. but will I be able to open my old XP-made files in them without compatability problems?

Bascially I don't want to pick a laptop based on other factors (battery power, speed etc etc) then find it's lacking compatible software and I really should have just got one that's on XP. Don't want to have to spend a load of money on new software..

I'd love to move with the times and get a new OS etc but not if it's gonna cause huge compatability issues. I've got loads of files from my dad's older PC (windows 95 or something) which won't open properly on my PC... why does it have to be so difficult to upgrade to new Windows?!

First things first, compatibility between XP and Windows 7 is, for the most part, pretty good. I can play games from the days of win95-98 on my windows 7 x64 machine without using much more than compatibility mode and run as administrator (right click the executable file and go to properties then to the compatibility tab to see what I’m talking about)

Secondly getting you're old software on your new net book. As these don't tend to come with cd/dvd drives this can be a bit tricky. There are a few ways to go about this and the easiest is to get a cd/dvd external drive. also if you know how to make iso's (cd/dvd software images) then you can use a program like magic disc (free) to "mount" the image and load your software by networking into the computer with the iso (disc images). it will require some technical skill to do this though it is by far the best method in my opinion.

Also if you care to stay legit, don't forget about proper licensing... be sure to uninstall anything you want to move from your old computer before putting it on the new computer unless you have the proper licensing to have the software installed on both. That is... if you care.

Office 2003 or better will be compatible with windows 7. The other editions should be as well but i haven't tested personally with them so I can't say for sure. Also if you get Windows 7 ultimate edition you can always use windows virtualization compatibility "http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/downlo... (not good for gaming).

    Hope I helped

There are compatibility tools in Office 2007 and 2010 so there's no issue there. However, MS will not support Windows XP for much longer so the sooner you upgrade to Windows 7 the better.

You can install your software via a DVD drive with USB and then transfer the docs with a Belkin transfer cable. I recently transferred docs from a desktop to a laptop without any problems at all.

this is how the thing works. A netbook is not a laptop computer, which your expecting it to do what you do on PC. with windows xp

Next Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 was never developed for the Netbook or Notebook systems so installing XP or Vista on a Netbook will cause problems, because there will be no hardware drivers in either operating systems for the Netbooks.

Though Windows 7 is installed on Netbooks it was never developed for the netbooks or notebook systems, Microsoft pulled a fast one on Netbook/Notebook consumers what they did was to cut windows 7 down to the bare minimum operating system so that it would run on the Netbooks or Notebooks

This was to stop Linux the actual operating systems that was developed for these systems from becoming known, Here is the major thing, What ever you do on your PC with Windows XP (pro, version 2002, SP3) You can do with Linux, Linux is faster, more secure and stable. it never crashes, never gets windows viruses and everything is FREE, Operating System and Application Software

You say you regularly use on the PC are Microsoft Works, Excel, Word etc. and Photoshop, Well there are alternative software packages that do the same job, and you can transfer your Microsoft Works data between your netbook and your PC, Has for Photoshop, again there is an alternative Photo Editor which is better, In simple terms what ever you run on the PC there is a better alternative software package available to you for FREE, in fact if you got a Netbook with Linux installed on it, you would soon dump windows XP and install Linux on your PC

There are several Linux distributions available that where designed for the NetBooks all come free, No doubt you have heard of the New Android Mobile Phones well Linux is the Operating System that runs them.

if you want to know which Linux system to get then click on my name and send me a message and I will point you in the right direction

I was just reading some of your replies it's surprising how little people know we are talking about a net book here, they are talking about PC's oh well they might learn one day

If you wish to show your little kid to read common phrases that'll likely come across and which are exceptions to fundamental phonetic principles then things you need will be here https://tr.im/QM4zl , Children Learning Reading program.

Children Learning Reading is a phonetic based examining system. This means that it first shows your son or daughter the letters of the alphabet and the appears they make. After that it applies this knowledge to simply help your youngster figure out words based on the appears the words make. This program is made to show the fundamental "code" for studying initially. Just following this has been perfected are conditions, complications, and variations introduced.

Most people believe that once they are diagnosed with some vision problem and start wearing eye glasses or contact lenses to correct them, they will have to do so for life in order to see better. Those who want a permanent solution to improve eyesight typically resort to Lasik or other corrective eye surgeries. But you you can also improve your vision without surgery and can see perfectly well without using eyeglasses or contact lenses. You can check here to know how https://tr.im/d5f13

Get yourself a transfer cable of any brand that you choose and then connect your computers together so that you can make a direct transfer of software from on computer to another.

don't use works at all, its complete crap. as for your programs, there is a relatively simple solution. you can make an image of your discs using various programs, i like imgburn alot..... http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/Data-CD-... very simple and totally free. create the disc image file, transfer it to your netbook using usb or network or whatever. install daemon tools lite http://download.cnet.com/Daemon-Tools-Lite/3000-26... also free though watch for it installing toolbars during installation, you can opt out. daemon tools creates a virtual disk drive and all you need to do is mount that image file you just created with imgburn in daemon tools and it will behave just like you had a disc drive and you just inserted the disc.
