Microsoft Security Essentials is the best free AV; however, you always need a backup, so I recommend getting Malwarebytes too.
@ Nick Clark, you said "AVG has a free version that blows most payed ones out of the water.."
Would you please tell me which one it "blows" out of the water?

Get Avast Free. It's the most effective free antivirus going. None of them delete cookies, to my knowledge. You can do that within your operating system.
Don't rely solely on an antivirus for protection: There are several other applications you need to be using as well.

I'm not going to give you a list of antivirus products. I'm only going to give you the BEST free antivirus. These products are only as good as people promote them to be. I've used Avast for over 6 years and NEVER had a virus get into my computer. Never. And antivirus products don't delete cookies. They aren't viruses. AV products do one thing, they protect your computer against viruses. No one product can do it all. And if you can't take the time to register your free software, then you should continue doing without it.
After 25 years in this business, I have found what I believe to be the best combination I've ever had of protective products. I have Avast, SuperAntiSpyware to remove the junk, and CCleaner to remove everything else, INCLUDING cookies.

AVAST!
AVG
I love AVG. AVAST! is okay though.
A lot of people use Malwarebytes.. It's okay.
I recommend not to use norton or symantic. Norton causes a lot of problems. They used to be the best out there until they were corrupted with the greed to make sure that people use it. If you put it on, its scans usually slow you down a lot (not to mention the other issues, REAL issues..). Trying to rid of it will be a pain.. Trust me xP
@the first guy Why should anybody listen to that? lol.. AVG has a free version that blows most payed ones out of the water..
