Driving from Los Angeles to Cambria, CA... Any ideas on which route to take?
My boyfriend and I will be driving from the San Fernando Valley (north-west of Los Angeles) to Cambria in August. We will be staying at one of the inns on Moonstone Beach. Can anyone suggest some good/alternate routes to take, and give us any advice for our trip? We're planning on leaving early in the morning (6:00-7:00AM). Is that early enough to avoid traffic if we're leaving on a weekday?
We were thinking of taking Hwy 1 all the way up, but I know that is a curvy road. I'd like the drive to be as enjoyable as possible for whoever is driving, as well as for the passenger. How long will it take if we drive at a "leisurely" pace? We have been up and down on the 5 to and from Monterey and wanted to try something new and closer to the ocean.
Thanks in advance!

i take the 101 until it turns into the 1 at Pismo. i find going straight up on 101 to be very boring compared to what you're missing on the 1. cambria is not so far up that you're on the crazy part of the 1 like up by Big Sur. besides the fact that i just drove that a wk and a half ago and it was so hot i was gonna pass out at the wheel on the 101.

Take the 101! It's very nice, and hugs the coast from Ventura to San Luis Obispo. You have rolling hills where the happy cows live, and beautiful scenery. You won't be sorry. Once you get past the 405, you're home free. Go to sigalert.com and see if the 101 west is busy. If it is, then take the 118 west to the 23, then down to the 101.
Once you get to SLO, then you take highway 1.
It's about 205 miles, depending on where you start in the SFV. That should be 3-4 hours.
Just for giggles, stop at the Madonna Inn at the south end of SLO and go see the men's room. Yes, even women take a peek in there! It's the only waterfall/urinal I've ever hear of.
Have fun!
