If you're on a contract, you have to keep the data plan. You have no choice.
If you don't have a data plan, the GPS on the phone probably won't work. Making it a very expensive brick.
T-Mobile will get you an unlock code for any phone they sell or have sold if you have an active account for more than 90 days. You have to call their customer service and request it, and they get it from the manufacturer and email it to you.
However, if you bought the phone on a plan and got a discount/subsidy, you cannot drop the data plan until the contract is up.
If you didn't want the data plan, why did you buy a phone that pretty much requires one to work? If you kill the data, most of the functions on the phone will quit working.
