Diet: you want to feed a high protein, low fat diet. Most cat foods have too low of protein and too high of fat. Ferret food is better, but still has too high of fat.

The one I used was 8 in 1 hedgehog food- it looks like cat food. You do not want to get Vita vittles, which is extremely common to find, and is more set up for rats with oat puffs and other non-protein things. This should be available at all times, unless you have a really fat hedge hog.

Insects: Mealworms and crickets are great. I would also kill flies in my house and feed them to him. earthworms are fine too, but can be messy. You can feed wax worms, but only in moderation because they are very high in fat- like feeding him cheeseburgers.

I feed 3-4 insects every night- they are mostly only awake at night, so the later you do it, the better.

People food- I fed in moderation. Stay away from fats and very high sugars. I fed chicken, some soups, air-popped popcorn, and bananas. These were a few times a week treat. My guy wouldn't eat anything else veggie wise.

No chocolate, avocados, or any exotic fruits. Keep it simple- apples, bananas, grapes, chicken, etc.

I fed my hedgehog (you're probably getting an African Pygmy hedgehog, the most common kind kept as a pet) a commercial hedgehog food, by Brisky's. Hedgehogs need a high amount of fiber in their diets, as they eat a lot of insects in the wild.

My hedgehog, Wedgie, was a fan of certain fruits, such as bananas and mangoes and grapes, cut up into small pieces. About a teaspoon or two should be a good portion, but make sure whatever's not eaten in about an hour is taken away before it can spoil. A little bit of cottage cheese is ok, but this is the only dairy product that I know of that hedgehogs can have- the milkfat in other dairy products is hard to digest and could result in discomfort or serious illness.

I wouldn't give him/her more than one or two insects, such as mealworms or dried crickets, per day, and since the hedgehog is a nocturnal animal, you could give it the insects around dusk, when it's getting up and ready for breakfast. Mine loved mealworms, live and dusted with a little calcium supplement powder, and dried crickets. I bought Fluker's brand dried crickets, but the brand may or may not matter much. The mealworms are high in fat, but live ones are a lot of fun for your hedgehog because it can forage, snuffling around the cage and feeling like a mighty hunter.

One thing is very important in a hedgehog's life, though, which will help it to keep healthy and happy: a solid-bottomed exercise wheel to run on. Hedgehogs can run for more than a mile each night in the wild, patrolling their little territories. This also helps them to keep healthy and trim by burning off the calories from the yummy insect treats.
