Housing in a tropical rain forest?

Is the housing designed to keep out insects and animals, such as monkeys? Do the windows have screens, or do the people have to settle for mosquito netting around their beds, but no window screens?

Most housing in a tropical rain forest would be on stilts off the ground 4 to 5 feet in case of flooding, and there would be windows but they would be open. Wild animals will normally stay well away as they would know that their life depended on that. When sleeping at night it would be on a hammock strung between 2 poles that would have mosquito netting around it. Most native people who live in the Tropical Rain Forest do not use mosquito netting and that is why the incidence of malaria is high.

Mosquito netting around beds is absolutely essential. It's better to keep the windows as open as possible. Anyway, the doors (if any) are very often left open, so screening the windows would not be effective.

Didn't I just answer this? You could do that with no real problems. You would need water and electricity, of course. If you framed up the sides and used glass or plastic for a roof, your biggest problem might be cooling it down and keeping it shaded. If you think about it, a rain forest is mostly shaded. That corrugated fiberglas is not really very stable and breaks down quickly, so you may need to rethink that material unless you are thinking temporary roof. It's really really hot in Sacramento, so keeping things cool is gonna be a huge problem.

    What do we live in?

Indian House. Photo copyright by AAJ. We've heard that some people actually have walls on their houses! But not us…

We don't need walls on our houses for anything. It doesn't get cold here, and we don't need much privacy at all. Privacy to us is a lot different than what you may be used to.

If you came here and built a simple house, put walls around it, and wrote your name on the door, that doesn't mean that it is “off limits” or “private”. But, we do practice privacy when we bathe in the river. Even though we don't wear a lot of clothing usually, the women bathe at one time or place and the men at another.

Are you used to having your own room at home? Well, you sure wouldn't get your own room around here!

To build our house, we put up some poles to support a thatched roof. Since it rains here so much, we do a good job in making the roof to have as few leaks as possible.

Windows can have screens, but that does not stop bugs. Mosquito nets are very useful while sleeping.
