Where to stay in San Juan, PR - with child, pref to walk or cab places?
Going to San Juan, PR in Nov. for 2 days before a cruise. We do not plan to rent a car and prefer to walk or cab to local sites, restaurants, etc. Pool is critical as we have 6 year old. Beach is nice to have. Being able to venture out of the hotel and find things - critical.
Thoughts based on personal experience appreciated - thanks in advance.
Also open to ideas on what to do while there.

The Caribe Hilton is very nice. It's a self-contained resort with pools and a nice beach, yet it's not too far from Old San Juan if you want to walk around. You used to be able to get great deals ($75/night) on rooms there through Priceline. (As it was the only option in the "Resort" category, you knew what you were getting). Suggest you check out BetterBidding.com or BiddingforTravel.com to see what people have experienced bidding for San Juan hotels lately.
Good luck!

Hmmm well your best bet would be an area of condado called Condado, this area is safe, clean, filled with english speakers, has beaches, tons of places to eat and...you'll find that practically all of the main stores and restaurants are all on one street, so it's easily walkable. As far as specific hotels I'm not sure I'd recommend the Caribe Hilton like the last person. It's an incredibly huge resort but if you leave nothing is easily accessible by foot. For hotels I'd recommend the Marriott hotel which is pretty centrally located along the main street. But ultimately it depends on your budget.
Any other questions let me know!

Howard Johnson is near all the restaurants and within a close cab ride to Old San Juan and other beaches.
