Will this hard disk boot up?

I have a hard disk out of a cnc machine that runs DOS, built in 1993, at start up it indicates HDD controller failure. The disk is an IDE 120MB, I hooked the drive up to a newer computer 2001-ish and cannot detect the drive, is the drive broken or is the disk too old to be detected by the newer motherboard? Also there is a quiet beep/buzz out of the drive when its powered up. Thanks!!

I'm afraid the disk is too old to work with a 'modern' computer. The hardware is probably not compatible.

does the drive also buzz when using it in the cnc machine or only in the newer machine.

you might be able to use the drive as an external drive/or second hard drive to retrieve your data, instead of using it to boot from.

You could have a problem with the jumper settings. In 1993, most computers used a plain ribbon cable to connect two drives. One drive had to have it's jumper set for "Master", the other "Slave". (A third jumper setting was "Single", for systems with only one hard drive.

By 2001, most computers were using "Cable Select". A drive plugged in to the connector at the end of the cable would automatically be "Master". A drive plugged in to the connector in the middle of the cable would be "Slave".

Of course, the drive itself could be toast. 120MB (not GB!) is not much of a loss, unless you're trying to recover data.

Check the jumper settings: you might find a guide on a sticker right on the drive.
