Does volunteering count as valid work experience?

I'm volunteering at our local hospice this summer. I'm going to do nursing at university in September and I thought that volunteering in this setting would be more useful in the long run than a paid job in a shop or something.

In the future when I'm looking for a job, would the hospice be able to go under work experience? Or does it not count since it's volunteering?

Thanks (I wasnt sure which section to put this in =S )

Good for you hun! That's such a lovely thing to do. :)

l'm hoping to volunteer with Deaf people when it comes up on the list but anyway!

Any work relations, including volunteering, work experience and original jobs all count as working, whether it's paid or not, and it will look amazing on your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and you can also ask for a reference so that in future, any jobs you apply for will get a good feedback about your work and you will more likely to get a job. Any experience you do when volunteering, whether it's administration or even working in a library, you're most likely to get jobs within a library and administration industry: PAID.

Generally volunteering gives off the impression of a strong and motivated worker. When applying for jobs, volunteer work, internships, and involvement in organizations such as sororities, fraternities, clubs, and athletics all show ambition, work ethic, motivation, and drive.

Volunteering especially looks good because it is non profit work for more than personal gain. Aside from helping out your community it will help you out in the long run. Although these types of things are not always necessary a well padded resume never hurt anyone.

Yes, especially since it's related to the field you are going into.

You can put it under work experience in your resume, and you can also use them as a reference.

    Congrats on volunteering :)

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it does

I've heard before that it gives you more brownie points, seeing as you've worked for the good of the community rather than for yourself, ie, getting paid

    =)
