Is it 100% necessary to sleep on the left side in pregnancy?

I keep reading all these articles that say it is best to sleep on your left side particularly in late pregnancy and they've got me totally paraniod...it's like they imply you're a bad mum-to-be or will seriously harm your baby if you don't do as they say. But is it 100% necessary or just preferable?

Ive heard it all, dont sleep on your back, obviously not your stomach, and to the left- Ive yet to ask my Dr but sometimes the only comfortable position for me is one they say not to lay in- I honestly think that its the less of two evils, either you toss and turn and stress yourself out due to lack of sleep, or you sleep how your comfortable, knowing its very likely that in the middle of the night your going to toss in a position people say "not" to sleep in

I have always slept on my stomach and when I got pregnant with my first I struggled to sleep on my left side. And usually failled miserably. Sleeping on your stomach is just not comfortable esp once you start getting big. Beyond that the whole sleep on your left side thing is just because it is the best way to sleep and keep a steady blood flow to the baby. Laying on your back or your right side the weight of the baby presses on veins and artries slowing blood flow to baby.

While sleeping on your left side is what is best for baby it is not a big deal. Getting proper rest is. So if you need to flop around to find a way to get sleep go for it.

    * I got so uncomfortable with my last pregnancy that I had my husband put a mattress on the floor and got a big pile of pillows and slept with my lower body on the bed and my chest and head on pillows with my belly touching the floor. Beyond funny if you ask my husband but some of the best sleep I got in my entire life.

    Good Luck.

  • I've read that too but I've also heard that if it's still comfortable for you to sleep on your right side or back that it's probably ok. A lot of people move a lot in their sleep and end up in different positions anyway. I think the only thing that's really not recommended is sleeping on your stomach.
