Sony Vegas Pro 9 is only playing mp4 files with a black screen.?
None of the video files are corrupted and I can view them outside of Pro, but when I open it there's just a black screen. AVI files work, but most of my videos are in mp4, and it worked a month earlier.

The reason why Vegas won't play the clips properly is because you're trying to open a format that it doesn't support. You could for instance have an AVI file with DivX video and MP3 audio and have another AVI with Indeo video and PCM audio.
Now, what all those things are doesn't matter. You need to either convert your video to a format that Vegas will understand (losing some quality in the process) or update Vegas to be able to read your file.
To go with the conversion approach just try one of the billions of video conversion programs out there. There's so many that I can't recommend a particular one.
To be able to take your existing clip into Vegas, you'll need to identify the sub-format of the video. This is called a codec. You'll need to identify which codec the video uses. I'd suggest a tool like G-Spot to be able to identify the format.
This website shows exactly how to use GSpot:

Chances are your video is in DivX or Xvid format and there is a way to import these into Vegas. Rather than detail all the steps here, I'll point you at this webpage which has detailed video explanations for the two different methods.

Hi, friend, first, you should know, mp4 is a media container which can be encoded with many different codecs, so sony vegas pro 9 just supports some special mp4 videos, not all, as I know, it supports mp4(H.264/AVC video codec, AAC audio codec) or MPEG2 well, so I think, you need to use a right software to convert your mp4 videos to the right sony vegas mp4 videos, or sony vegas mpeg2 videos. I am using a good software RZ Video Converter which can convert any videos or audios between different formats with good quality, such as convert your mp4 videos to the right sony vegas mp4 videos, or sony vegas mpeg2 videos, etc. Yahoo or google search and download RZ Video Converter. Hope it can help you.
