Oh my gosh...I adore that book. I haven't read it in a long while, but this is what I remember.
The setting is the Bayou in Louisiana. There is even some Cajun French spoken, and it has a translator in the back.
Basically, this women gets killed, and this one dude is the prime suspect. (I can't remember his name...) He gets off on a technicality. A lot of people are angry about it. Especially, the woman's family. So, these two cops/detectives named Nick and Annie are sort of investigating it together. Nick is obsessed about trying to get the guy behind bars because he was one of the detectives investigating the murder in the first place. I can't actually remember why Annie was trying to help.
I do know a little more, but they are spoilers.
Hopefully, you aren't trying to figure out the whole book to write a report. This probably won't help you too much. I really suggest you read it. It's a good book.
