Best non-mac computer?

I'm going to be a freshman in college next year and need a good laptop. thats not super pricey.

I'm looking for a good battery life, normal like office programs, have a lot of music and pictures and videos. i kind of want to get into more video editing stuff too though. any suggestions for what to buy? cheapest mac is like a grand. so anything under that would be cool. and if it had some sort of like cool features, i know thats really vague, but some kind of special things it could do, it'd just be a bonus.

suggestions?

    Asus, its best brand for customer satisfaction.It comes with a default two year warranty and has lowest failure rate among all manufacturers.

    Sony is the second best and Dell comes third due to great service.

    HP is the worst brand when it comes to customer satisfaction and product quality.

    Your best choice would be HP then HP is the best for all the office programs, it has lots of music and pictures believe me HP is the best for a school laptop.
