How to strengthen wireless internet signal?

Well I just got my old laptop working again with Linux, and the internal wireless card, is broken and unfix able. Well I dug out an old Netgear wireless USB adapter (at least 5 years old), and it connect to the network (in my room) but will not work on the internet (in my room). The only way I can get it working with the internet is to stand relatively close to the hub. Well my macbook pro, and other wireless internet devices work fine in my room. Is there any way I can strengthen the signal? If I buy a new adapter will the signal be better?

Please help!!

    I would recommend getting a new wireless adapter, overtime the adapter you have probably just degraded over time. Most new adapters reach much further and only cost around $20

    For strengthening a wireless signal I would recommend getting an antenna for your router or a wireless repeater.

    i would say et a newer card to put in it only like 10 bucks i hear a coke can pointing towards the hub can help a little
