I've been in Madison now going on my 4th year for school and have used Verizon, Tmobile and as of two days ago Sprint.
Do not go with T-Mobile. DO NOT GO WITH T- MOBILE. It is by far the worst carrier I've encountered with the Madison area. Outside of Madison (milwaukee area,) it is fine, but I frequently have no service or emergency calls only during my short 3 month tenure with T mobile.
My roommate has ATT and he does fairly well. He doesn't have dropped calls or straight to voice mail calls but he usually averages 1-2 bars around UW campus area.
Verizon did fairly well for me. I had service mainly everywhere even with zero bars but frequently had calls go straight to voice mail without showing even a missed call. Also, I find the fact that they charge $100+/ month for an individual plan that you can get for much cheaper from similar companies ridiculous.
As of the past 2 days Sprint has been fabulous. As per Sprint reputation, the building penetration signal is not the best there is but I have 3g service and high bars on campus everywhere. There are building where I can drop down to 0-2 bars but txt messages and calls still go out. I did drop a call between Vilas and the Lucky building, but it went back to full bars within 2 seconds. I also like the fact that $70/ month gets you everything. Mobile to mobile minutes any carrier, unlimited data, txt, email, etc. literally $40/ month cheaper than verizon.
From what I here, US Cellular is spectacular in madison, full bars everywhere but outside the Midwest there is not a lot of service and the phone selection is inferior to the other 3. Hope this helped
