the a/c needs to be recharged with freon

an '01 Sentra doesn't use freon, dont contaminate your system. My idea would be to take the vehicle to a reputable repair facility and have it checked by a professional. Most shops now days charge 19.95 or so to do an ac inspection. After the inspection, you will be told what needs to be done as well as obtain an estimate to do the repair. Then you can decide if you want to repair the problem(s) or leave with no ac and pay the 19.95. As far as the problems, it could be low/overcharged on refrigerant, bad fan, bad cooling system, bad expansion valve, bad high side hose, bad low side hose, bad compressor, bad fuse, bad relay, bad switch, bad reciever, bad evaporator, bad condensor, too much oil in the system just to name a few of the hundreds of possibilites.

moe is right. at my shop we mostly see low charged systems, leaking condensors are common, bad compressor or compressor clutch but it really could be one of a hundred different possibilitys
