What's the easiest language to learn if you speak English: Spanish, German, or French?

I'm going into high school and have never taken a foreign language. I've only spoken English my whole life. I live in America. What would be the easiest language to learn: German, French, or German?

Also, what do you think would be the most useful to me?

To start, Spanish or French would be the most useful to you. German is spoken officially in Austria and Germany, but not as widely spoken as Spanish and French.

I learn French and I found it the easiest to learn. The syntax is similar to English, for the most part, and there are literally hundreds of cognates (words that look the same in both languages and mean the same thing)

    To illustrate a few:

    magazine, table, téléphone, télévision, etc

The pronunciation is challenging, but once you understand it, it's not that hard.

For example, ais, aient, é, ée, ait, ai, et, est, és, and ées all sound the same :) haha. But don't let you turn that off! French is a great language and culture to study.

I took Spanish for only a couple of months and it never clicked with me...but that's just me. It's surprisingly similar to French in some aspects and not too difficult to learn at the beginning, but gets harder (or so I hear).

German is in the same language group as English (Germanic languages) but it's very different in the sense it has cases, and English doesn't. There are also genders, 3 (instead of the normal 2 in romance languages) I believe (male, female, neuter), but I could be wrong, I've never taken it past the beginner level :)

    Good luck!

I am a native English speaker and have learned all 3 languages you ask of... German, French and Spanish. I found that German has the most complex grammar, so you may not like that. There are 3 different "genders" for words (male, female, neuter) and 4 different cases. However, I love the sound of it and it is very phonetic so it's easy to learn the pronunciation. French and Spanish are easier for English speakers grammar-wise, but not necessarily in pronunciation. I have a very hard time when I try to pronounce French words correctly. I live in California, so Spanish is the language I am focusing on getting better at since I live so close to Mexico. Perhaps you should consider which language you will get the most use out of in Poland. I would guess German, since you are so close to Germany and other German speaking countries and cities. Yes, the grammar can be confusing at times, but so can French and Spanish. Nothing is as hard as English :)

I'd highly recommend Rocket French to others. Why? It is especially useful for "false beginners" like me. It was most beneficial to have a clear and concise explanation in English and then a comparison to French. The group French lessons I had recently taken would never explain in English what it was they were imparting, ie. an English translation of grammar points, or vocabulary, etc. - this was frowned upon. But http://tinyurl.com/RocketFrenchToday does this.

It clears up any confusion and lets you move on without feeling unsure or confused on just what it is you are saying/comprehending. You can really benefit from having this wealth of information to guide you and it'll give you a lot of confidence in learning French. I work with quite a few Quebecois and they have been very impressed with my progress ever since I started using Rocket French.

The weekly newsletter is most helpful in providing interesting aspects of French culture and language and reading the text has become easier and easier to understand. Often I start following a lesson and find I click on some aspect that I'm not too sure about and then follow this link to a deeper level and I get so deep into the subtleties that I loose track of what it was I was trying to study but nevertheless I gain a clear understanding of what it was that intrigued me. This increases my confidence tremendously that the next time I come across this point I can move on knowing I understand instead it instead of just brushing it by. So, I find that I now don't worry about not finishing a lesson from front to back because there is also so much more to learn on the way through the lesson from the links provided. A text book could never do this. The electronic version is so much more handy to use.

I don't know about German but alot of people find French and Spanish difficult. I would say Spanish is the most useful cause there's a lot of people who speak Spanish in America. Unless you're planning to move to Germany or France or Europe (not Spain).

German and English are kind of alike vocabulary wise, but German has a much more complex grammar system than Spanish or French. It is not true that French is harder than Spanish. French actually is more clear and simply than Spanish but the pronunciation is an obstacle you have to acheive. Pronunciation is not hard, you just have to learn what sounds letter combinations make. You will encounter Spanish the most if you like in America, a plus. Spanish the probably the easiest language to pronunce and the grammar is very simple. I am a student of both French and Spanish and they are my favorite classes. You have to work at it, becuase if you don't and you don't like going to the class, your not going to do very well.

For a native english speaker, German would be easier to pronounce since it belongs to the same group of languages as English. But german is a bit tricky to learn, so I'll go with spanish, which is much easier to learn and learning it is less time-consuming as well.

I'm a African American I think It's Kinda hard but I'm getting to a point where I'm learning It I just cant remember It very too well. I recommend watching Spanish shows and try to learn It listen to Spanish music. Ask friends to teach you Spanish while you teach them English.

Probably German, because they share a large chunk of vocabulary (60%). While English and French share some sentence structure, they're not as similar as people think.

Spanish isn't an easy language, despite popular belief.
