Question about a bereavement?

A family I know recently lost their brother to a suicide. I plan to send a small arrangement for the funeral, but would also like to do something special for the surviving brother. Is a restaurant gift card in a sympathy card appropriate? Are there any other ideas for special sympathy gifts?

Sweetie, your heart is in the right place. The family will see and appreciate the arrangement. However, I don't think the restaurant card is appropriate. Yes, by all means, send the brother the sympathy card. In it try to be as warm as you appear to be. Mention that you would like to take him to dinner one night when he feels up to it. But that you'll let him decide when he thinks he is ready and he can let you know. That way, if he wants to vent his feelings, he'll have a friend's ear to listen. Most of the time people that are mourning simply need someone to listen to them. And that's an important job!
