Most powerful shotgun round legal for US civilians?

Ordinarily, "destructive devices" (anything over .50 caliber) is completely prohibited for civilian consumption... The exception being shotguns!

So that beckons the question... What are some examples of extra-ordinarily powerful (NEEDLESSLY powerful) shotgun slugs (or shot, or otherwise) that is legal for the general US public?

"8 gauge guns are perfectly legal in most states. You just can't hunt migratory game birds with them because of the Migratory game Bird Treaty. I regularly shoot barns pigeons with an old Boss SxS 8 gauge.

Bye the way, an over bored 10ga 3 1/2" gun measures about 8 gauge and shoots alot more shot than my 8ga Boss. I load the 8ga 2 9/16" ammo to 1 1/2oz of shot. That is the same shot load as a 12ga magnum."

Punt guns are legal to own, but not legal for waterfowl

Remington makes 8 gauge industrial shotguns and shells that are used to shoot clinkers out of kilns.

How about a 4 gauge shell? More powerful than an 8 gauge shell

I have seen 2ga commercial shotguns.

These date from the late 1800s and early 1900s and were ground mounted and generally fired with a lanyard (like an artillery piece) instead of a trigger and were a bit larger than punt guns.

there's the 12 gauge rifle from hell shell.

its a brass cased 12 gauge 3.5" magnum with a 1 oz slug. out puts a bit over the ME of .50 BMG.

you'll need a special high pressure shotgun to shoot that.

If you're savvy you can load some up yourself . . . Imagine the biggest 12 gauge slug you can find. Drill a hole in the front and fill it with some ultra-fine Pyrodex. Now stick an extra sensitive primer on the front.

Some experimenting of course, but I'm sure you could work it out in a month or two.

EDIT: I'm talking about drilling, then loading the slug into a hull. Not drilling live ammo. So don't misunderstand.

i agree on the 3.5 inch 10ga slug. Thats about the biggest you can get at 1/10 of a pound slug.
