Why is the literal truth of the bible important to some Christians?
The bible is surely just a description of key religious events and interpretations of them. If the bible is to be believed then the 10 commandments and Jesus exist independently of the bible. As a scientist I hold true (actually "true" is a simplification...) certain scientific theories but I do not insist on the literal truth of a particular scientific textbook. It is weird to my mind that the bible has such an exalted status even though it was written by what were in effect "historians" (of a sort) and we know historians make mistakes. Why is the literal truth of the bible important to some Christians?
There's even a verse in the bible that says something like "the only way is Jesus's way" yet some Christians sound like they are in a different belief system that says something like "the only way is the Bible's way". Strange thing is that these do not sound like the same thing (exactly) to me?

In a nutshell, it is directly related to the way in which some Christians think the message(s) of the Bible came to be in our possession. In the literalist mind, the Bible is literally the Word of God -- a being...as in the Holy Spirit. It cannot be anything but true and timeless because it is "a literal part" of God himself.
If it isn't true, it isn't God's Word and God isn't God.

inspite of the undeniable fact that some prepare a primary god, Allah isn't the comparable God as in the Torah or the Bible. i understand that many tension the assumption-approximately co-existance it particularly is high-quality, yet to attempt to assert that each and every physique religions are the comparable could have eternal outcomes. The Qur'ran became into penned some 650 years after the dying of Christ and the Muslim faith did not attain acceptance for yet another 6-800 years. The Jewish faith is the pre-cursor to the Christian faith. The Christians believing that the Messiah, Jesus, has already arrived, triumph over and could return lower back. The Jews worship the comparable God, yet like the Muslims, do not settle for Jesus because of the fact the promised messiah . the place the priority lies is in which you ascribe to. If Jesus is the reality, which i've got self assurance, then he's the only street to heaven. If the Jews are top, we are nevertheless waiting and doubtlessly risking our eternity on their concept. reality isn't man made, it particularly is got here upon, so do your homework, and have self assurance in whichever you come across to be reality. Eternity rests on your determination.

They are stuck between a rock, and a hard place.
They must choose between literal truth, metaphor, and a mixture of the two.
Trouble with the latter two, is that any metaphor can have a thousand meanings, and if you are looking at a mixture of literal and metaphor, you first have to decide which is which.
It is much easier to to assume that the bible is intended to be literal, especially the OT, and blame the contradictions, and technical errors, on men.
With the NT, the first four books actually only offer a very bland sort of guide, not dissimilar to, "The Golden Rule(most of the time)".
This resulted in lots of little sects and cults, because Jesus made no real, hard and fast rules and threats
Saul/Paul, with his fanaticism, his misogynism, and his venustraphobia, actually gave Constantine, and hence christianity, the tools to pull the NT into a whole, and to call it "literal".
...And again avoid all the awkward questions.

Scientifically if you do not insist on the literal truth of a textbook....there is nothing hanging in the balance....scientific textbooks are just that....scientific....you cannot gain any hope or learn how to be a moral person..or get to know the One who created you and nature etc......
The bible has an exalted status because God Almighty through holy spirit inspired its writing..and yes through imperfect man whom we can identify with....and while there may seem to be flaws the overall theme (kingdom of God) and the prophecies that have been fulfilled and yet to be are still intact and speak louder then anything....you cannot know the way to Jesus unless you read the bible....John 17:3, 2 Timothy 3:16, Matthew 19:26
Think about it ....God created ALL things and yet what do scientist copy off of ...Nature...they are always looking to nature to come up with solutions....and yet there are many things ...they just cannot figure out.....and who gave them the mind to do what they do?

Circumference = Pi X Diameter.
Diameter of 100 = Circumference of 314.
According to Bible
Diameter of 100 = Circumference of 300.
According to Bible 300=314
Source(s): According to mathematics 300 =/= 314. I will stay with math and logic, thanks. - ?Lv 71 decade ago
If the Bible is not the literal truth, then it has to be interpreted. This takes thinking, which is difficult for many people.
