How can you update I Phone ?

OK i have a hand me down I Phone its silver on the back...Is there a way to upgrade the phone to run to a 4.0 newer version?

    You have the first generation iPhone. Because that phone is 3 years old, Apple decided to "kill" it. 4.0 only works on iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

    just plug it in and open itunes and press iphone or whatever the name of it is on the side and press update or check for update

    you can start by asking a mobile shop. don't do anything if don't know how to do it.
