What should a person do to ease pain/discomfort after having wisdom teeth out?

My boyfriend's wisdom teeth have been causing him significant pain on and off for a few years, and he finally (at age 29) has an appointment tomorrow morning to get them removed. He has a prescription for narcotic painkillers (Percocet, I believe) and an antibiotic, and tonight I'm going to get him some ice cream and soft foods for when his novicaine wears off, but I was hoping this community, which has been so helpful before, might have some suggestions as to what else might help to relieve the inevitable pain and discomfort.

Also--any ideas for soft foods that won't hurt him? All I can think of so far is yogurt, pudding, and ice cream, which is a heck of a lot of sugar.

Thank you!

Hi, I actually had one of my wisdom teeth taken out yesterday and since the anesthetic has worn off I have been eating normally except being careful not to bite on that side. The information I was given after it was removed is that you shouldn't have anything too hot or too cold so not sure if ice cream is a good idea. Also, it says to rinse the mouth with salt water after 24 hours of extraction. It also advised to take painkillers if it causes any pain and the best time to take them is within the first hour of extraction, which i actually did and i have to say i havent experienced any major pain. Just a small amount of swelling.

Anyway good luck to your boyfriend, let him know it doesn't hurt at all whilst its being removed which is what i was most afraid about!

You're on the right track with his foods...if he doesn't like/need a lot of sugar, try some low-fat plain vanilla yogurt. Also Del Monte fruit chillers is a good idea, they are soft and will help ease the pain on his gums. I hope this helps!
