When can a basketball player "press" in basketball?

Can they only do it when they are losing? Or can they only do it in the last quart?

In most leagues Pro, college, high school, etc. a press can be run at any time during a game. With the exception of some youth leagues. The purpose of the press is mainly used by teams who: 1. Don't want to allow a patient offense the opportunity to set up, hoping to throw them off out of their comfort zone, 2. To put pressure on a team who may have difficulty handling the ball, in order to jump out on them early, setting the tempo and momentum in pressing teams favor, or 3- to try and pressure a team into making mistakes in order for you to get back into a game where you might be down near the end.

    Hope this helps.

Playing a full court press on defense is a very physically draining defensive approach.

It might be effective, but by playing a press, you'll pretty much exhaust your entire team in 10minutes.

The NBA season is a looooooong one...Players and their energy levels have to be preserved, so any full court press is usually only used when its absolutely necessary.

    Whenever the player/s want to.

But common times when players do is in the 4 th quarter or the team they're on is losing.
