Stories of humans gaining immortality?

I'm looking for any myths, folklore, or fairy tales involving gods or otherworldly beings granting immortality to humans. (Such as Demeter putting Demophon in the hearth to burn away his mortality.)

I'm looking for slightly less known stories, so please don't include things like Hercules. Stories involving fairies or other such creatures would be acceptable.

Update:

I'm not looking for modern books; I'm looking for myths and folklore.

There is the story of Cupid and Psyche. Cupid was in love with Psyche but his mother Aphrodite ordered him to make her fall in love with another man but he refused instead he would visit Psyche at night but told her she must not have any lights on. This went on for awhile tell Psyche curiosity got the better of her and when Cupid was asleep in her bed she lite a candle to see him causing Cupid to flee. But after a few days of Aphrodite seeing her son so depressed she gave Psyche Ambrosia so Psyche would become a goddess and live with Cupid forever.

One story from the ancient Greek that is a little less known in that I have never heard anyone refer to but only encountered it in the Iliad...

During the fighting there was one guy that was doing so good that Athena decided to make him immortal. She went back to Olympus and got some kind of serum that would do that. She arrives back and he is still fighting but in Ares' way, the blood lust way. Athena not being able to abide lust ever, was now so disappointed in him that She just poured the liquid on the ground.
