My dog is acting odd and i can't figure out what is wrong. please help?
my jack russel/dachshund mix is licking everything and wont stop. when i pick her up, she keeps licking and her head kind of bobs outward (almost like a chicken) and her throat does as well. she doesnt have anything stuck in her throat so i know that's not the problem; nor is it reverse sneezing because i know what that is. she occasionally coughs and hacks and her stomach/abdomen is sort of soft. the only research i could find is that it may be an upper respiratory infection. what do you think could be wrong?

I would recommend taking her to the vets as soon as you can, i don't want to frighten you but in my experience she could of had a stroke or some sort of brain dis-function, i hope and pray im wrong but i have had 2 dogs that have both came down with similar symptoms 1 had a brain tumor, he was only 4 :( and the other had a stroke :( he was 19. I just hope im wrong and you get her checked out and shes fine. Good luck

If she has been chewing on anything recently (treats, rawhide, or anything crunchy), it could be esophageal irritation. It's kinda like when you swallow a potato chip wrong and it makes you cough. If it doesn't get better with some drinks of water and a few hours, then you really should bring her to the vet to make sure it isn't anything more serious. At this point, I wouldn't give her anything to soothe it just in case it's not irritation. Hope that helps!

I agree that you should take her to a vet, if you don't see anything that may be stuck or irritating her throat. It could be that she ate something strange or dangerous. Check that something isn't stuck at the roof of her mouth - that happened to my aunt's dog once, but she was just pawing at her snout.
