Is it safe to drive to Las Vegas from Los Angeles by car?
I am deciding if it would be safe to drive my 2000 Honda Acorrd to Las Vegas this summer from Los Angeles. My car has a mileage of 100,000 miles. I believe my car's engine is functioning fine. I've never drove long distance before, and I'm worried my engine may fail from the heat or the tires may burst from the heat. So, I just need some facts about taking the drive from LA to LV. I plan on taking a short stop in Barstow.

The real question is not "is it safe." the real question is, is it worth it?

I have driven that stretch between Vegas and LA both ways multiple times. The drive , even though you go up over mountains, is not a bad drive at all. Most of the road is straight, not curved and there are passing lanes for trucks to move over for you (and you can use them too) and so most times when you are going UP the mountain there are 3 lanes. The one thing that you do have to watch is some of the mountain masses that you go over are very long; you will be driving uphill for 15 miles. So if you try to go too fast your car will overheat. You will likely see people pulled over who have overheated. So just take it easy going uphill and don't try to go 75-80 MPH going uphill. Its good that you have done that maintenance, it will help. You may want to plan to stop about half way, in Barstow, and take a restroom/lunch break and give your car a chance to cool down some. The cops will be out, especially when you are coming down the mountains near the few small towns that you will pass. My advice is stick close to the speed limit. The Nevada cops are known for driving high powered cars and sometimes in SUV's so you can't always pick them out.

We can't tell you here but advise you to take your car to a mechanic and have it gone over. You should do this before any long trip. Explain where you are going and what your concerns are. Let him help you decide. It is a long stretch of desert with nothing around for your car to fail. Here in Vegas 100,000 miles is just breaking in your car with the weather the way it is. Maintain your car and go another 100,000 miles easily.

I live in Las Vegas, and yes it is very safe to drive here, although one concern is Baker Grade. It is a steep grade and many cars have broken down because of overheating, don't let that scare you. If your car is well taken care of that shouldn't be a problem at all. Just make sure the tread and inflation of the tires are good, just common sense stuff and by all means carry extra water with you, not just for your car , but for you, just in case. Even living here we carry extra water around town with us, just in case. The desert can be a scorcher. Enjoy your trip here to Las Vegas.

The desert heat is the issue as you cross major tall mountain areas. Get the chair checked out for belts, tires/pressure and tread, oil, coolant, etc. Recommend you travel after dark or very early in the morning And make sure you have a cell just in case and lots of water to drink

It's roughly a 270 mile trip. You'll be on an Interstate highway all the way with plenty of company. If you have a problem help isn't far away.

The car should be fine. This assumes that you have kept regular maintenance done on it. tires that are in good shape and properly inflated( the way they should be kept always) will have no problem.
