Varnish is used primarily for natural wood so as to show the grain.

If you are painting plastic. Go to home depot they have a special paint for thats for painting plastic house siding, it covers in one coat.

You should always use primer then paint and then varnish. Varnish is a sealant that is what protects the color you are painting. When you went to buy your supplies they should have or could have told you this at the supply store. Never be afraid to ask if you aren't sure. Because if you mess up it costs you double to fx the screw up.

Source(s): I have done many projects working with primer, paint and varnish. I have also done many projects where I've worked with stain and varnish and the mostimportant thing to remember is that varnish is always a sealant where the others are not.
