2000 Jetta GLS 2.0L manual: Iturn the key nothing happens. Ideas?

I have a 2000 Jetta GLS 2 litre. This morning I went to start it and nothing happens. It behaves as if I haven't pressed in the clutch. I checked the clutch switch and it does move freely. Any other ideas? This car does have a remote car starter. I'd try starting it that way, but as a manual trans. car it needs to be "primed" first while the car is running, something I can't do.

it might be that the battery is totally dead, which is possible it being 10 yrs old if the battery hasnt been changed in a long time. My Passat did the same thing and i jumped the car easily

Put a voltmeter or test light across the battery.

When you try to start it, it should drop from 12.5 volts to about 10, and they come back up when you stop.

If the battery was totally dead, it would initially be more like 11.5, would drop to below 9, and only come back to 10.

If the battery seems good, and the voltage does not drop enough, it could be dirty battery terminal.

Or it could be something like the ignition switch.

    Try jumping the starter solenoid.

( in neutral and parking brake on)

You just take an old screwdriver, and connect across the large terminal on the starter solenoid that comes from the battery, to the small spade connector that is from the ignition lock.

If this works, then it is probably the ignition switch, which you can test with a small light.
