Should I learn French or German?

I'd like to get jobs in Europe, and live there someday. I'm trying to decide which is more useful, and which country is nicer to visit. I'm leaning towards German. Is it unreasonable to try to learn both?

It is absolutely reasonable to learn both. Business dealings usually require people to speak one of the Universal languages(English, Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish[regional], etc.) If you are planning to go German, you should learn French too. And going for France and learning German while you're at it won't hurt you at all.

Ideally you must be trained Spanish, because it is likely one of the such a lot ordinary languages on this planet. The such a lot ordinary languages are, indexed so as of such a lot used ; Mandarin (845 million individuals), Spanish (329 million), English (328 million), Hindi-Urdu / Hindustani (240 million), Arabic (232 million), Bengali (181 million), Portuguese (178 million), Russian (one hundred forty four million), Japanese (122 million) & Punjabi (109 million) Of your record Japanese is the one one in this record, however even inspiration there are plenty of local Japanese audio system the language is not all that good unfold world wide. German (ninety million) and French (sixty eight million) are each rather ordinary, with French being extra extensively unfold world wide than German is. So in brief, of the record above, I could opt for French. A lot of first-rate literature comes from France and it is effortlessly now not the identical while you learn translations. It additionally makes it so much less complicated to be trained Spanish, OR, if you understand Spanish already, then you'll be able to already be used to a few of the sounds you'll be able to uncover within the French language.

I speak both languages and they both have good points and bad points.

As a native English speaking people, German may look easier for you because it's closer to English but the language is very located (Germany, Austria, Switzerland and a tiny part of Belgium).

French may look much more complicated but quite spread over the world (Canada, France, half of Belgium, part of Switzerland, half of Africa, Vietnam, pacific islands...).

You said you'd like to learn a language to get a job in Europe. Good idea but it depends on what you want to do. German could be useful in banking, insurance, industry...on the other hand, French is helpful in arts, medicine...

Of course, you can try to learn both but I think it is better to speak one correctly than knowing 3 words of each.

    Back to your questions :

which is more useful ? Both, choose the one you prefer

and which country is nicer to visit ? I suggest you France on that point ;)

I am gonna help you pick one by talking a little bit about these two languages .

Let's start with French.I am sure you are quite familiar with this language even though you don't know how to speak it .It is very widely spoken in this world .Mainly in Africa and part of Canada.Of course it is the official language of France.

You know,in Europe, most people tend to choose to learn French .Because this language has a cool reputation and it is considered to be fancy by lots of people .I couldn't think of any flaws of this language .I mean, knowing how to speak French would never have any negative effects.

Okay,Let's move on to German.German is also spoken in several nations in Europe. But it is not as global as French .However,it is of the same language family----Germanic as English. So as a native English speaker, you would find it relatively easier and closer.

Germany is the largest economy in Europe, the forth largest in the whole world right after the USA,Japan and China. So that means it can open lots of business doors for you .

If you wanna settle down in one nation, you should choose the one you like.

Also you could learn both if you are smart enough .

    Best wishes for you !

De ma part,,,,,,,,,,fais les deux !

    Die Beide SVP !

French is easier,German is more exacting--both are difficult to pronounce for Americans. Meaning/syntax French est le plus pareil que l'anglais,Auf Deutsche mann muss bis zum Setzesende warten es zu verstehen konnen !

    commonly spoken vocabulary---French: 5,000; German: 7,500 !

Nimts dein Wohl ! A ta choix !

A recent job search in Le Monde,Paris ...."English is useful, German is mandatory".... I am sure the opposite can be located !

To my amazement I have found more French-speaking people who know German than German-speaking people who know French ! That was in San Jose/ East Bay at French and at German speaking gatherings.

A well-educated European likely speaks both (English also)

Knowing one helps in learning the other.

I speak 5 languages and due to my husband's diplomatic job I meet people form many countries and French is the only language I have never used.

You can learn both languages at the same time if you got talent for languages or if you are diligent.

    GERMAN!

French is for sissies. (no offense)

Germany is WAY more environmentally friendly (they are really big on protecting the environment)

Try to live in southern germany if you can. Like somewhere near Munich. Bavaria is so pretty! The weather is much nicer there. :)
