pop out the ring around it and it'll jus fall out. blow it off and kinda scrub it with your fingers a little bit and get the lint and **** out of it and it'll work. mine does it all the time

Trackball issues are covered by the warranty.
If you bought the phone new, and if it has no other damage, you can get it repaired or replaced. I don't know who you have to call, where you are, to get the warranty supported. You might have to call RIM directly.
Whoever supports the warranty might make it an ordeal to get it done, but RIM acknowledged an issue with their trackballs a while back, and it is covered.

you must have an older version, all new blackberry curves come with a touch sensitive pad like the ones used on laptops, the trackerball was a design fault as it failed frequently, there is no easy solution, you can replace the tracker ball, or change the phone, I would go for the latter as soon as possible.

be very careful when you pop the ring off, though as it has four little "legs" on it, that are extremely fragile. You don't want to break those legs off since they snap in and hold the track ball in place. One thing that works is to take a cotton swab, dip it in denatured alcohol (pure) and use the swab to gently wash the track ball while it is still in place in the phone. If worse comes to worse, many independent phone stores can fix your blackberry by replacing the track ball assembly. It cost me $25 last time i did it.

I've had the same exact problem happen to me a couple times. I had to take the battery out and leave it be for sometimes hours, sometimes days.
