Certain Game Boy Advance game problem. What should I do?

I have this game, Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World, but every time I turn off the power in my Game Boy Advance, it starts over with no save file.

Does it need a new battery or something? And if so, what kind of battery does it take, and how do I open the cartridge to replace it?

Update:

I'm not talking about the Game Boy Advance system itself. I'm talking about the Game Boy Advance game cartridge.

Are you actually hitting SAVE in the pause menus? And it might not be the GBA system. The Game might be broken. Too old ya know?
