what is that little metal bar that keeps a car door open?

my driver's door is missing something that holds the door open- without it, gravity draws the door shut as I'm trying to get in and out!

what is this part called?

any idea how expensive it will be to fix?

The part that holds the car door open is the detent rod, aka check rod. Some people refer to it as the door hold-open mechanism. It has 2 detent positions which hold the door half open or fully open.

EDIT: The repair expense will vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle but it is typically very inexpensive. Depending the the type of detent mechanism, the parts kit can cost anywhere from $15 or $20 to $40 or $45 and the labor charge will usually be 1 hour at whatever the hourly labor rate is at the shop. It doesn't take an hour to do the repair on most vehicles but shops usually have a 1 hour minimum labor charge.

To be honest, from this establishing I already understand you study some distance too lots YA/teenager fiction and function yet to discover an thrilling thank you to place in writing in the 1st man or woman. it is brazenly common and wonderful while you're 14, yet, for a professional author, it is undesirable and lacklustre, the tale lacks any intensity or intrigue. And the communique on the tip replaced into surprisingly worded and repetitive :/ Sorry, no longer my cup of tea in any respect. And P.S you ought to use the united kingdom version of 'understand' in case you like :) that's the entire unique besides! :D
