What's the nicest city out of Manchester and Leeds?
I've seen both only briefly but the impression I got was that Leeds had been done up quite tastefully and was quite trendy, whereas Manchester was a bit grubby and tired.
Did I get the right impression or did Manchester catch me on a bad day?

Leeds looks a bit schizophrenic, they really went overboard building very tall (but very slender) tower blocks recently that look like pencils stuck in the ground at random.
On a recent visit to Leeds we found out that their Town Hall is not open to visitors (whereas Manchester welcomes you with open arms to see the statues, murals, mosaic floors, etc). Also their art gallery is pokey and grotty. Leeds doesn't have nearly as many things to do as Manchester.
It all depends on what you saw and what you expected to see. I'll have to admit for instance that Manchester's Northern Quarter is described in all the tourist literature as buzzing, trendy, full of life, etc but it has no pavements, no trees and lots of abandoned buildings. So although you might have a very good night out here at the pub, jazz club, wine bar etc if you walked around by day you might find it dirty and dull.
Personally, I think the Northern city that has scrubbed up the best is Sheffield. The pavements and street furniture sparkle, it's all so new, plus they have done a superb job with the town hall square and winter gardens. Very impressive!

Manchester is a lot bigger than Leeds.Theres more there and i generally find it a bit more interesting and exciting
I live in Leeds and always have done, it has gotten rather glossy over the past few years but its a little bit of a building site at the mo. There were loads of projects got started just before the recession but then went bust when it started. The one down the bottomo of Briggate for example.

Manchester is bigger than Leeds, and a lot more safe than Leeds, Manchester is more greener, and you more likely to live a healthier life in Manchester. Manchester is the richest city outside of the Capital one of the richest and safest places in UK and Europe.
Sure you never got the two mixed up??
Manchester is far far much nicer, safer, posher, richer and cleaner than Leeds, Leeds is a tad bit run down, grotty, needs big regeneration and is barren.
Manchester is better than Leeds.

I personally prefer Manchester, but I'm not really one for noticing buildings... I was more focused on stuff you do there. I think Manchester is a more lively, buzzing place.
