Is it legal for a minor (18) to attempt to bring alcohol from Canada (Alberta) to the US?

I've been told that if border patrol stops you, you're still in Canada, so you haven't done anything illegal yet. But that sounds sketchy. What is the penalty if you are caught and the probability of this happening?

Same as you would get anywhere else in the US.

It is illegal for an 18 year old to be in possession of alcohol in the US>

When you are entering the US from Canada, you do not stop on the Canadian side. You stop at US Customs in US territory, so your little justification to yourself isn't going to work.

No not legal. Its like going to the Bahamas, its legal for 18 yr olds to drink there but once they get back to the U.S no drinking or bringing alcohol over

The border guys would be the US ones, not Canadian. You probably wouldn't get charged, but they would probably confiscate it.
