E-mail teacher back. Ask for more information, camera suggestions.
In mid 1960's, a simple point and shoot camera for the general public was a Kodak Instamatic.
A simple adjustable camera was the Kodak 135 Pony.
An entry level college camera consisted of a camera body or two, wide angle lenses, normal lens, short telephotos and longer telephotos. Most camera bodies did not have a built in light meter, so you had to use the exposure scale printed on the box or buy a separate, hand held light meter.
Best to e-mail teacher.

For a college photography class, you'll probably need something with film. Half the battle in those classes is learning how to develop the film. If you do end up only needing a digital camera, you can check some out here http://www.digitalimaginghq.com/ However, I'd suggest you email the professor with this question. He'd be happy to clarify, I'm sure!
