Its very simple.. divide the miles travailed by the amount of gas bought to refill the tank. example ( say you went 200 miles and when you refilled your car you bought 10 gallons so 200 divided by 10 = 20 mpg.

Many newer cars have an automatic instantaneous/average mpg meter on their dash.

I can understand how it may be different. After all - it would be hard for you (as a real-world individual, not a car testing company) to conduct a perfectly controlled test. You don't want to be running down the car from a completely full tank to absolutely empty, because that would leave you stranded! The best bet, would be to run it down to exactly halfway on your fuel meter, and then just divide your fuel tank capacity by 2 before doing the calculations.

This is not perfect - your tank and your car's meter may not be perfectly calibrated between your reading and your actual tank. There is always a margin of error involved.

MPG is miles per gallon, or M/G so take the miles driven per tank of fuel and divide them by gallons purchased.

take the miles ou traveled and divide that by the gallons of gas you just put in to fill up. tank has to be full when you start recording miles and full when you refill it.
