I am a multi grade primary teacher in a remote Athabaskan village in Alaska. This year I will have grades k-2 and will also try to have a PK program.
Good questions...I would love to answer them
What strategies do you use to help neglected or rejected students enhance their peer relationships?
One of the things I do to help students with peer relationships is to use cooperative learning groups of mixed grades. This teaches the kids to work together and allows the older students to have some leadership responsabilities. I also require that everybody teach each other with respect. As for the neglected children I try to meet their needs where I can. That might mean making sure that they have clean clothes to put on each day, healthy food, or a safe place to be. Students come oer to my house to hang. (It is a small village and acceptable...may not be in other places.
What programs occur in the school/classroom that promote positive character education and moral development among students?
In my class we have "self managers" a self manager is a student that can take care of themself in the class. Because they make consistent good behavior choices they also are free to choose what order to do assinments in, when to get a drink or use the rest room and where to sit to work, ECT. We have what a self manager does posted...They are kind and polite, use their time well, use quiet voices, clean up after themselves and reports but does not tattle. We also have a counsolor that comes in monthly and works with the kids oncharecter building
How do you encourage students to resolve conflicts?
We have the rule to report but don't tattle and we consistantly talk about the difference. I also do a lot of modeling with situations that might occure.such as how to ask somone to share a toy. What I tell them is..Ignore it, walk away, talk it out, and if it is a big problen get help.
What activities and classroom strategies do you use to build self-esteem in your students?
Because I teach Alaskan Natives one of the most important things that I do is to honor their culture and give them chances to xpress it. We have culture class and Native Language class that the students participate in.Also stratigies like teaching to the students level, positive disciplin, genuine complements

I've often found that a class project can help this process. I've done a class collage many times, where each student contributes by drawing something related to the class theme. Some themes to consider are "We are the World," "Friends,' and "The Golden Rule."
