What does the letters OEM on a Windows 7 disk mean...?

Is the disk the same as a regular W7 or is it diffrent, would you buy it on a full version or upgrade. Also is there a version that will allow me to install it in more than one PC?

Thanks for your help

OEM does not mean it is made for a specific manufacturer, which would be a misconception of the Acronym. Manufacturers incorporate their own drivers to the OEM CD. The difference is nothing more than the packaging of the software, There are no fancy boxes or user guides or manuals with a real OEM disk and it cost less. It is exactly the same Windows. I use OEM CDs all the time. Windows can not be installed to a second computer under the licensing agreement, it would be a violation of copyright laws. You don't own Windows, you have a license to use it and nothing else.

It means that copy of Windows 7 has been customized for a specific computer manufacturer (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and probably won't work on any of their competitors' machines. It says nothing about the disk being a full version or an upgrade.

If you're being offered one on the Web, be VERY careful buying it, no matter how great the price. It could be worthless on your machine.

    Hope that helps.

    Original Equipment Manufacturer

Source(s): None; it's standard manufacturing jargon.
