Does installing a new hard drive in a PS3 make your PS3 slower?
I recently installed a Western Digital 500GB HDD 2.5 inch SATA w/5400 RPM, but it seems like when I do certain actions on the XMB, it freezes for a couple seconds instead of moving instantly like it used to. Then yesterday, I did the optional installing of game data for 3D Dot Game Heroes and instead of making my game move faster, every time I access the Map, it does that same freezing for a couple seconds instead of moving instantaneously. Obviously it has something to do with my new hard drive, just wondering what exactly about it could be causing the problem though?

Your hdd is simply like a bucket filled with water, it only store it that's it. But I have the same hdd as you bc I got the unit with 80 gb but I got the same hdd so now I have 500 gb. But lets get serious remember that even thought the ps3 is a power beast its not perfekt, but that it takes time isn't weird. On the top right corner there is kinda like the analogue clock. When its busy it will go in cycles and yes it kinda freezes to bc it doing something. And yes sometime it also crashes but that's not any thing new right.
Remember that you have warranty on the hdd so if there is something wrong with it you can complain. But I would give it at least some days before I returned it or whatever.

No, quite the opposite. I installed an Hitachi 500GB HDD 2.5 in. SATA 7200 RPM and mine has been considerably faster. There are some PS3 optimized HDDs out there, if you search.

I installed the same hard drive but 320gb & have noticed quite the oposite, my ps3 runs much faster, load times at least. I noticed some games load times seem to have been cut in half. Very strange.
