National Guard Split-Op Questions?
I have a couple questions as I am planning to join the National Guard and take the Split-Op enlistment. I am about to start my Junior year which will be my third year in JROTC. I want to do Split-Op because I eventually plan to commission as an Active Duty Infantry officer, so I want to be in the Guard when I am in college. With that information here are my questions:
1) What rank will I be when I join, when I am at basic, and when I am a Senior in High School?
2) What will I be doing in the Guard while I am finishing my senior year?
3) Can I pick 18X (SF Candidate) and still do National Guard Split-Op?
Any answers will be greatly appreciated!!
Well I want to do split op because 16 weeks of OSUT is too long for the summer break between high school and college. I understand the Guard and Reserves are nothing like active duty, my father is currently an O5 in special forces and my stepfather retired as an E7 also in special forces. Both were active duty so I do have a lot of resources for this. I understand that active duty units are very different from reserve units which tend to be more laid back since they only work one weekend a month and two weeks training a year. I wanted to get college benefits, time in service, and infantry experience (however little it may be). I do understand that that experience may actually be worse than just going in fresh and I am still thinking about whether or not I will actually go through with this. I understand this is not a decision to be made lightly. But I do sincerley appreciate the answers and input and will take that into mind.

1) if you've done 3 years of jrotc you enter as an e-3. you wont make e-4 till you've been in for atleats 18 months.
2) whatever they can have you do without being MOS Q'd
3) no. SF guard units get to be picky, so good luck getting into one without being prior active duty. i mean it is possible, but realistically none of htem will allow you to do it.
just some advice though: why do you want to do split ops for 11X and more importantly infantry for it? you're going to have an entire year to get out of military shape between the bsaic and ait parts of osut, and when you go back for the rest of your training you're going to have to struggle to keep up with the guys that are doing it strait through.
as for the NG for infantry: why? i get wanting to do college, but infantry is one of those jobs where YOUR LIFE depends on your training. lets put it this way: an active duty infantryman thats been in for 6 months will have more experience and training under his belt than you will have recieved in your entire 4 years in the guard. so why waste your time? plus the guard is notorious for having poor standards, so do you really want to arrive at an active duty unit expecting things to be how they were int he guard and immediately get labeled a **** bag because of the way you do things? either do 4 years active, get out, go to college and reenter as an officer that actually knows how things work, or do ROTC then enter the military on active duty as a butterbar who, although not knowing how **** works, atleast isnt bringing a bunch of bad habits to the table. dont half is *** it though by going to the nasty guard.

1. Enlistment rank will be determined by how many years of jrtoc you have completed, at the time of your enlistment
Any JROTC after you enlist, is meaningless for rank purposes.
2. Drilling like everyone else, so that would depend on your mos.
3. No, you have to be 20 years old for the 18X enlistment option, plus I don't think the 18X is even available for guardsmen.,
4. If your going Infantry, you really do not wanna do split option.
reasons:
1. Its like going to basic Training twice - after a year, you will have forgotten most of what you learned in basic, so when you start the 2nd half of OSUT, its almost gonna be like starting from scratch.
2. You will be far behind those who went to OSUT when you join a company.
a. They will have had training in OSUT that you did not get in basic.
b. They will be in far better physical condition than you will be after a year off. ( you can tell yourself that you will stay in shape, but the fact remains, you will not be in infantry shape )
It would be like joining football practice three weeks after practice started, no matter how good of shape you are in, your not in football shape.
c. You will be behind the learning curve for OSUT, you will have to bust your butt to catch up to everyone else on basic infantry tactics, etc, that you did not learn in basic, that they have been doing already in OSUT
d. It boils down to, when you show up, your gonna be slower, dumber and not up to speed, as everyone else who has been in OSUT from the start. So for a couple of weeks, you will be slowing everyone down, while you get back up to speed. And they will be letting you know, you are slowing them down !!!!!!
