Whats a good laptop for a college student?

Ok, I am about to start college. I have a laptop, but it is very large and only has a battery life of 2 hours. I am looking for a laptop thats under $500, has good memory, and a long battery life. I just need it for basic things, like Internet and Microsoft Word.

Any suggestions? And can anyone tell me what the difference between a laptop and a netbook?? Which is better?

If you already have a standard laptop and aren't looking for a computer that does much, then I agree with the netbook option. Most netbooks are below $400, have a fairly long battery life and are very portable. Their screens and keyboards are quite small but I don't think that'll be much of a problem, assuming that you'll do most of your typing on your laptop. I recommend getting a 6 cell battery with your netbook because standard 3 cells usually just last about 3 hours. The 6 cell battery might bulge out a bit and weighs more than a 3 cell, but it beats the hassle of having to bring the AC adapter.
