10-gallons is really too small for Platies, Platies should be kept in 15 gallons or larger .
10-gallon aquariums are difficult to stock, as very few fish can be kept in so small a space, and even fewer should be. All 10-gallon compatible fish will need both a filter and a heater.
Some stocking options could include:
1 Betta,
10 or so smaller shrimp, such as Ghost, Amano, or Cherry.
1 Smaller snail.
1 Betta,
6 PYGMY Corys. (These can be hard to find, but most good local fish stores will order them for you. Normal Corys, even the smaller varieties will not work in 10-gallons.)
1 smaller snail.
Or
1 Betta,
6 Endler's Livebearers OR 5 female Guppies. (Male Guppies and male Bettas are incompatible.)
1 smaller Snail.
Something along those lines.
All of the above mentioned fish would appreciate a planted aquarium. Use live or silk plants, as plastic plants can tear the Bettas delicate fins. Shrimp should have a piece of driftwood in their home, as well as some Java or other comparable Moss.

That will not work. The Male Betta will bite the guppies tails off. Its done that to all my guppies before. Then its a long painful death for the guppies. The platties are going to pick on the betta, because of his long tail, and then the betta wont be able to swim and then it will be a long painful death for him.
I would recommend:
All Platties
All Guppies (that's what I have now. they are all healthy and doing great. I've had them for a year now)
I'm not sure about the shrimp. I've never owned any.
Also get a couple catfish (albino corydoras work AMAZING! I have two of those in my ten gallon tank, and my tank is so clean. mine even eat the algae and believe it or not, fish poo. i know its weird)
Just about anything will pick on a betta or guppy because of there big tails. Bottom feeders usually dont. Like I said earlier, Albino Corydoras Catfish are excellent.
Don't feed the fish to often. Since the tank is so small, too much left over fish food that the fish can't eat it all, will make your water super cloudy. I've seen it so bad at some pet shops, you can't even see the fish.
If you are going to do fish with both males and females, buy a couple babysavers. There little nets that hang over the side of the tank. They can still give the fish filtering and the oxygen from the water, even medicine, if you get a fish disease in your tank. Just drop a small pinch of food in daily, and it will work out. Once the babies are born though, put the mother in the other babysaver so she wont eat the babies.
Good Luck :)

From what I've heard the Betta will fight with the guppies and platties.
Other than that, it sound great! Instead of the Betta try 4 guppies 2-3 platties and 2-4 ghost shrimp. If you decide on getting female guppies make sure you have 2-3 females for every one male. Males are typically more colorful and smaller, while females are a bit more dull in color and a little larger.
The guppies will breed like crazy and you will have an overstocked tank. I recommend getting just male guppies.
*Remember* before getting your fish to cycle your tank for 2-4 weeks. Using water conditioner and a biological supplement.
Good Luck, and Hope this Helps!

Putting a male betta with guppies is a little risky. The guppies have longer tails and bright coloration, and it's possible the betta could target them. This depends on his individual personality, however. He should be fine with the ghost shrimp, but sometimes they randomly decide that the shrimp would make a good snack!
There's a small risk whenever you put a betta in a community tank, but they tend to do best with peaceful bottom feeders. Cory catfish are very cute and fun to watch, and they usually do great with bettas because they stay on the bottom while the betta swims up top. They like to stay in groups, so I'd recommend getting 3 or 4 of the smaller species, such as Panda corys, pygmy corys, or dwarf corys.
So, you could have 1 betta and 4 cory cats. Or, you could just forget the betta and just have the 4 guppies, 2 platys, and 3 ghost shrimp (I hear they do best in trios.)
Here is a useful tool to figure out if your tank is overstocked and compatible once you choose your fish.
Remember to research the fish you want to buy and to either cycle your tank beforehand or add the fish very slowly if you want to do a fish cycle! Best of luck!

That won't work! The male betta will fight the other fish, and the shrimp will eat the guppies/platties!!! This is a very bad combination! I would reccomend guppies platties and maybe neon tetra or goldfish with them

NO! ive tried a betta with other fish and it dosnt work. all they do is drift and fight.i ended up giving him away for being so horrible. and with the guppies id do 6 (2 males and 4 females). but youd be smartest to just talk to the salesperson about the rest before buying
goodluck
