My two parakeets are REALLY loud! HELP?
I have two parakeets and they chip quietly, which is fine but then out of no where it turns into this huge chip fest, and it gets extremely loud! I was told to ignore the bad things that the birds do and reward them for the good. so i walk away when they get really loud and come back when they quiet down. they are both boys and they won't eat any bird/parakeet treats. I've tried...how do I train them to not do that? My dad works 3rd shift and goes to bed at 4pm so if these birds aren't trained soon, then they have to go...Please help me!

Unfortunately, you probably should have read into Parakeets before you purchased one. Anytime you plan on buying a bird, you should look up videos, or go in person to check out their vocals. Parakeets, like most members of the Parrot family, can be very loud. Although there are a few things that can help quiet them down.
1. Two Males?
It is not suggested to put two males of any species in the same cage. The only time this changes, is if you have a flight or aviary cage in which the birds have more room (and more females). Males will typically fight, and these "chirp fests" may actually be them bickering and fighting. I would watch them carefully to make sure they are getting along.
2. Toys toys toys!
A busy and occupied bird, is less likely to sit around screeching all day. Most birds when being purposely loud are simply bored! They need stimulation, much like a child. So it's important to make sure the birds have PLENTY to play with. Go to your local pet store, or make your own variety of toys for the bird to play with. Taking the bird out to socialize, is also a great idea!
3. Covering the Cage
At night, or when your dad is sleeping you can simply cover the cage with a towel. Although you certainly don't want to do this all day, birds typically will quiet down and even nap when their cage is covered from the sunlight. Over-doing this can lead to an unhealthy bird, so make sure your only doing it when it is appropriate.
If none of these work, you may end up having to get rid of the birds. Birds are very vocal animals, and although it depends on the bird.. you should expect your Parakeet to be quite talkative.

Hello. Mainly babies, or even if they are not, they should not be kept in the same cage. You should have two separate cages. Having any type of bird is a HUGE commitment. Most parakeets chirp when they want attention. And be aware you can not permanently stop the chirping. Even the most well trained birds at zoos still chirp. It is what birds do. But don't give them away. It will take about 2 months or shorter to get these birds used to you and your home. Handle them as much as possibly and keep them in separate cages when you are not there. Birds can be your best companion. I know mine is. And good luck!

YOu won't be able to totallty stop it. Its what the males do and not all birds like treats anyway, none of my do. THe best thing I found it to cover the cage and turn off the light when I want my boy to be quiet. Perhaps if you get into a routine of doing that they will learn that it is quiet time.

All great answers. Let me add one thing from my memory of time with our parrot friends: jungle time. Actually, most birds have a period of time - usually late afternoon - when they just cut loose. I think it's a last hurrah before settling down for the evening. Every hookbill I ever had went nuts with the noise about 4 pm every day. Just shut the door, or partially cover their cage. I don't think it's something you can train out of them. Have fun!
